讀者 Joe 來(lái)電郵問(wèn)：on the edge和on edge 有什么分別？
Edge 是邊緣。 一張紙可以有邊，窗臺(tái)也有邊，甚至懸崖也有邊。我們說(shuō) on the edge 的時(shí)候，是指這些實(shí)物的邊。
例如：
A small ant is crawling along the edge of the table.
Don't walk on the edge of the cliff. It could be dangerous.
On edge 說(shuō)的則不是實(shí)物的邊緣，而是一種心理狀態(tài)。一個(gè)人累了，然后喝了幾罐紅牛，再加上公私兩忙，就難免心情緊張，動(dòng)不動(dòng)就大動(dòng)肝火，又或者心神恍惚，戰(zhàn)戰(zhàn)兢兢，這種心理狀態(tài)就是 on edge。
某甲近日和女朋友吵架，結(jié)果做事常常犯錯(cuò)，答非所問(wèn)，老板得知原因后，把他召入辦公室訓(xùn)話：
You'd better shape up, or out of the door you go. That'd give you a reason to be on edge.
別以為跟女朋友吵架有什么大不了，掉了工作的時(shí)候你就會(huì)知道什么叫 on edge。
